Empowering Your Future
Banking is still one of the top career choices in India. 2026 is turning out to be a busy year for it too. SBI, IBPS, RBI, and NABARD have all opened or announced new hiring drives this year, with thousands of openings across officer, clerical, and specialist posts. This guide lays out what is open right now, what each post needs, and how the selection process works.
Bank recruitment in India runs through a few main channels. IBPS holds a common exam each year for Probationary Officers, Clerks, Specialist Officers, and Regional Rural Bank posts. Its results are used by most public sector banks, except SBI.
SBI runs its own hiring for Probationary Officer and Junior Associate (Clerk) posts. RBI and NABARD recruit on their own too, filling officer posts within their own organizations rather than going through IBPS.
PO (Probationary Officer) posts put candidates on a management track right from the start. The work covers branch operations, credit checks, and later, leadership roles. Most banks ask for a graduate degree along with strong reasoning and math skills.
Clerk posts are called Junior Associate at SBI and CSA (Customer Support & Sales Associate) under IBPS. This role covers everyday branch work like account handling, cash transactions, and customer service. Graduates from any stream can apply.
SO (Specialist Officer) posts are for specific skills such as IT, law, agriculture, HR, marketing, and Rajbhasha. These need a matching professional degree rather than a general one.
RRB (Regional Rural Bank) posts under IBPS cover Office Assistant and Officer Scale I, II, and III roles at rural and semi-urban branches. These suit candidates who don't mind a posting outside big cities.
RBI Grade B and Grade A are officer roles at the central bank. The work touches monetary policy, financial rules, and bank supervision. The Reserve Bank of India Services Board handles this hiring directly, not IBPS.
NABARD Grade A posts hire Assistant Managers for rural development banking, legal work, and protocol roles at India's top rural finance institution. NABARD runs its own recruitment board for this too.
So many boards run their exams around the same time. Candidates studying for one often end up tracking the others as well, since the syllabus and exam windows for PO, Clerk, and SO posts tend to overlap.
Eligibility depends on the post and the bank
Post | Minimum Qualification | Typical Age Limit |
PO (SBI/IBPS) | Graduation in any discipline | 20 to 30 years |
Clerk (SBI/IBPS) | Graduation in any discipline | 20 to 28 years |
Specialist Officer | Relevant professional degree (IT, Law, Agriculture, etc.) | 20 to 30 years, varies by post |
RRB Officer Scale I | Graduation in any discipline | 18 to 30 years |
RRB Office Assistant | Graduation in any discipline | 18 to 28 years |
RBI Grade B | Graduation with 60 % marks (55 % for reserved categories) | 21 to 30 years |
NABARD Grade A | Graduation or relevant professional qualification, stream-wise | 21 to 30 years |
Age relaxation applies for reserved categories, in line with government rules. This usually means 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC/ST candidates, with more relaxation for PwBD and ex-servicemen. Exact numbers can shift from one notice to the next, so it helps to check the actual advertisement before applying.
Most bank exams follow a similar path, though the number of stages depends on the post.
Stage: What Happens in the Preliminary Exam: A screening test covering reasoning, math, and English
Main Exam: A more detailed test, often with written answers for officer posts.
Group Discussion or Interview: Held for PO, SO, and Grade A/B officer posts, skipped for most clerk posts.
Local Language Test: Checks if a candidate knows the state's local language, mainly for clerk posts.
Document Verification: Certificates and category proof are checked before joining. Medical Fitness Confirmed before the final appointment
Officer-level exams, including RBI Grade B and NABARD Grade A, add a psychometric test or personality check before the interview. Most of these exams have negative marking too, with a quarter to a third of a mark cut for each wrong answer. Wild guessing can hurt the score more than help it.
Banking has stayed popular for reasons that haven't changed much over the years. There's steady pay, a clear path up through internal exams and reviews, pension or retirement benefits depending on when someone joins, and postings spread across the country.
Officer-track jobs at SBI, IBPS banks, RBI, and NABARD also come with real responsibility early on, from approving credit to supporting policy work, which isn't always the case with similar private-sector jobs.
Add-ons like House Rent Allowance, dearness allowance, and medical cover sit on top of the base pay. Public sector banks also tend to offer more job security than most private lenders.
A few major drives are open or on the way through the rest of 2026. SBI released its Clerk notice on August 7, 2026, for 1,538 backlog posts reserved for SC, ST, and OBC candidates. Applications stay open until August 27, 2026.
A bigger, regular SBI Clerk drive, expected to bring 10,000 or more Junior Associate posts, should follow soon. SBI PO hiring for around 900 to 1,000 posts is also expected shortly.
IBPS has already put out its full exam calendar for 2026-27. IBPS PO prelims are set for August 22 and 23, 2026, and IBPS SO prelims for August 29, 2026. IBPS Clerk (CSA) prelims fall on October 10 and 11, 2026, and IBPS RRB Officer Scale I prelims on November 21 and 22, 2026. RRB Clerk prelims follow on December 6, 12, and 13, 2026. The IBPS Clerk notice is already out for 11,403 CSA posts.
RBI Grade B hiring for 60 officer posts across General, DEPR, and DSIM streams is underway. Candidates have cleared the prelims and mains, and the process is now moving toward interviews. A separate RBI Grade A and B notice for 21 specialist posts, covering legal, technical, Rajbhasha, and protocol and security work, came out in February 2026.
NABARD Grade A hiring for 2026-27 has not been announced yet, as of early August 2026. Based on past years, the notice usually comes out between July and November, and vacancy numbers tend to sit somewhere between 85 and 100.
Before Applying
Candidates should check that their age and qualifications match the post they want to apply for. Rules can differ even within the same bank's hiring round. Applications should only go through the official site of the recruiting body, be it sbi.co.in, ibps.in, rbi.org.in, or nabard.org, after checking the advertisement number, closing date, and fee. Fees and refund rules differ by category and by bank, so it's worth checking the actual notice rather than a third-party summary.
