However, wherever applicable, candidates belonging to these categories are generally required to produce a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India. In all the major banking recruitments done in 2026, the nationality rules are the same. 

Educational Qualification for Bank Jobs

The most important factor for the selection of Bank Jobs is educational qualification. In most of the banking exams in India, graduation from a recognised university is the minimum educational qualification required. Candidates having a bachelor degree in arts, commerce, science, engineering, agriculture, pharmacy, management, computer applications, law or other recognised disciplines are generally eligible for officer and clerical examinations subject to fulfilling the requirements of the specific notification.

Some specialised examinations require additional qualifications. In the case of RBI Grade B (General), there is a minimum academic performance required in graduation or post-graduation, whereas the specialist officer recruitments by IBPS and SBI require professional qualifications related to the post advertised. Similarly, NABARD Grade A recruitment specifies discipline specific educational qualifications depending on the stream for which applications are invited. Age Limit for Bank Jobs

The eligibility criteria for Bank Jobs vary from post to post depending on age and also with the recruiting organisation. The minimum age for most of the officer and clerical recruitments (like IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO, SBI Clerk, IBPS RRB Officer Scale I, etc) is 20 years and the maximum age is 30 years. However, for some posts like clerical posts or regional rural bank recruitments, the maximum age limit varies.

However, the age criteria for the recruitment in RBI, NABARD and IDBI may vary as per the post. For instance, the age limits and educational qualifications are different in RBI Grade B recruitment as compared to IBPS or SBI examinations. Likewise, specialist officer positions often have varying upper age limits based on the type of post and experience requirements. The reference date to determine age is provided separately in each notification so the candidates should calculate their eligibility according to the reference date provided by the recruiting authority. 

Category-wise Age Relaxation

Banking recruitment agencies also provide age relaxation to reserved categories as per the Government of India guidelines to provide equal employment opportunities. The Upper Age Relaxation for candidates belonging to the following categories viz., Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer), Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), Ex-servicemen and other eligible categories will be as per the recruitment notification.

The age relaxation varies from recruitment authority to recruitment authority and also on the basis of the reservation rules applicable. Candidates claiming reservation benefits should possess valid category certificate issued by the Competent Authority in the prescribed format issued by the Competent Authority on or before the closing date for submission of application. If you do not submit the valid supporting documents during document verification your candidature may be cancelled or you may not get the benefit of reservation.

IBPS Eligibility Criteria

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducts Common Recruitment Process (CRP) to recruit the candidates for the participating public sector banks. All recruitment notifications clearly mention eligibility criteria in respect of nationality, educational qualification, age limit, reservation and other conditions. Candidates must fulfil all the eligibility conditions on the cut-off date as mentioned in the notification. Filling the application form or appearing in the examination does not confirm the eligibility. All claims will be verified in the document verification process. 

IBPS PO Eligibility

IBPS Probationary Officer (PO)/Management Trainee exam is one of the most popular banking exams in India. According to the IBPS PO 2026 notification, the candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government. The degree should have been awarded on or before the eligibility date as indicated in the notification. Those who have not received their graduation results after the stipulated date will not be eligible to apply.

IBPS PO Age limit: 20 years to 30 years (as on 01.07.2026) Candidates must be born on or after 02.07.1996 and on or before 01.07.2006 (both dates inclusive). Age relaxation for candidates of reserved categories shall be as per the rules of Government of India. Candidates must also meet the nationality requirements and produce documentary evidence in support where appropriate. 

IBPS Clerk Eligibility

For IBPS Customer Service Associate (CSA) recruitment, the candidate should possess a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university or any equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government. Candidates should have a valid graduation mark sheet or degree certificate and should mention the percentage of marks obtained in graduation while registering online. The Educational qualification should have been acquired on or before 01.08.2026.

The age limit prescribed is 20 to 28 years as on 01.08.2026. Candidates must be born no earlier than 02.08.1998 and no later than 01.08.2006 (both days inclusive). Upper Age relaxation for SC, ST, OBC (NCL), PwBD, Ex-servicemen and other reserved category candidates shall be as per Government of India rules. The notification also states that the candidates applying for the vacancies in a particular State or Union Territory are also required to have proficiency in the specified local language. Candidates must have studied the local language in Class 10 or any higher qualification otherwise they have to qualify the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) conducted by the participating bank before joining.

IBPS SO Eligibility

The candidates applying for the IBPS Specialist Officer (SO) 2026 examination should be of Indian nationality and must meet the age limit, educational qualification, and other eligibility criteria as prescribed in the official notification. A candidate must be a citizen of India or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan or a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. Candidates other than Indian citizens should have a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India wherever applicable. The age restriction for the IBPS SO 2026 has been set between 20 to 30 years as on 01 July 2026. Candidates who were born between 02 July 1996 and 01 July 2006 (both the dates inclusive) can apply for the IBPS SO 2026. Relaxation in upper age limit is available as per Government of India guidelines including 5 years for SC/ST candidates, 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates, 10 years for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), 5 years for eligible Ex-servicemen, Commissioned Officers including ECOs/SSCOs who have completed the prescribed period of military service and 5 years for persons affected by 1984 riots. Candidates claiming age relaxation are required to submit valid supporting certificates in the prescribed format at the time of verification of documents.

IBPS RRB Eligibility

The IBPS Regional Rural Bank (RRB) recruitment is conducted separately for Office Assistant (Multipurpose), Officer Scale I, Officer Scale II and Officer Scale III posts. The educational qualification will vary depending on the post.

Candidates are generally required to have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university for Officer Scale I and Office Assistant posts. Relevant work experience will be as per the stream and scale of appointment for the post of Officer Scale II and Officer Scale III.

The age limit also varies as per the post. The standard age criteria is 18 to 28 years for Office Assistant and 18 to 30 years for Officer Scale I. The upper age limit is higher for higher officer scales as you also need relevant banking experience. Candidates are asked to verify the eligibility criteria for the specific post before applying. 

SBI Eligibility Criteria

The State Bank of India (SBI) recruits Probationary Officers, Junior Associates (Clerks) and Specialist Cadre Officers separately. SBI has its own recruitment process unlike IBPS and the eligibility conditions are prescribed separately for each examination. All eligibility requirements must be met by the closing date of online registration. 

SBI PO Eligibility

SBI PO Eligibility Criteria: Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university or its equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government. The notification 2026 also allows final year or final semester students to apply provisionally if they provide proof of passing their graduation on or before the date mentioned in the notification. 

The prescribed age limit is from 21 to 30 years. Age relaxation is permissible to SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), PwBD, Ex-servicemen and other eligible categories as per the norms of the Govt. of India. SBI says the candidate has to meet all the eligibility norms related to nationality and character before appointment. 

SBI Clerk Eligibility

Candidates applying for the recruitment of SBI Clerk (Junior Associate) should have a bachelor degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Candidates in the final year of graduation are generally allowed to apply provisionally like SBI PO recruitment if they submit the proof of graduation by the date mentioned in the notification.

Age limit for SBI Clerk is generally 20 to 28 years with upper age relaxation for eligible reserved categories. Candidates should also have a reasonable knowledge of the local language of the State / Union Territory for which they are applying. Disqualification in recruitment process may occur if the language requirement is not met.

SBI SO Eligibility

The recruitment for SBI Specialist Cadre Officer is very different from PO and Clerk recruitment. Educational qualification will be as per the post advertised. Certain specific posts require professional degrees like Engineering, Chartered Accountancy, MBA, MCA, Law or other specialised qualifications. Apart from the educational qualifications, many vacancies for Specialist Cadre Officers also require relevant post-qualification work experience.

As the eligibility criteria for each Specialist Officer post is different, candidates need to check the post-wise qualification, age limit and experience before applying through the application form.

RBI Eligibility Criteria

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the central bank of India and it conducts separate recruitment exams for various posts like RBI Grade B Officers and RBI Assistants. Unlike IBPS and SBI recruitment, RBI specifies educational qualifications, minimum marks required and selection procedure for various posts. So, candidates before applying online RBI recruitment they should read the official notification carefully.

RBI Grade B Eligibility

RBI Grade B is one of the most popular Government Bank Jobs in India. According to official RBI Grade B Recruitment 2026 notification, candidates applying for the Grade B (General) post must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 60% (50% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates where reservation is applicable) aggregate marks or a post graduate degree with a minimum of 55% (pass marks for SC, ST and PwBD candidates where applicable) aggregate marks. Professional and Technical qualifications recognised by the Government of India is also accepted as specified in the notification. 

The prescribed age limit is between 21 to 30 years as on the cut off date mentioned in notification. Upper Age relaxation is applicable for reserved category candidates as per Government of India rules. RBI also provides further relaxation in certain cases such as candidates having M.Phil. or Ph.D. qualification and eligible candidates with relevant experience in banking or financial institutions subject to the conditions mentioned in the notification. 

RBI Assistant Eligibility

The RBI Assistant examination is another highly competitive banking recruitment conducted by the Reserve Bank of India. Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from a recognised university with the minimum percentage prescribed in the notification and should satisfy the age criteria applicable to the recruitment. RBI Assistant recruitment also includes a Language Proficiency Test (LPT) after the Main Examination. Candidates must be proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the official language of the state or union territory for which they have applied. Failure to qualify the Language Proficiency Test may result in disqualification even after clearing the written examination. 

NABARD Eligibility

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) conducts recruitment for the posts of Grade A, Grade B and various specialist posts. For Grade A (Assistant Manager), candidates generally should have a bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate qualification in the relevant discipline as prescribed for the particular stream. NABARD recruitment is for General, Agriculture, Forestry, Animal Husbandry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Finance, Statistics and several other specialised disciplines and the educational qualifications required vary considerably depending on the advertised post.

The age limit for NABARD Grade A recruitment is different from other bank exams. Age relaxation will be provided to the candidates belonging to reserved categories as per the Government of India norms. Candidates must check the discipline wise educational qualifications thoroughly before the application form is submitted as the eligibility varies a lot from stream to stream.

IDBI Bank Eligibility

IDBI Bank recruits Junior Assistant Manager (JAM), Specialist Officers and other banking posts on its own. The educational qualification required for the Junior Assistant Manager recruitment is a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. Some recruitments require minimum qualifying marks in graduation while Specialist Officer posts usually require professional qualifications and relevant work experience depending upon the post.

The prescribed age limit varies as per the recruitment. Educational qualifications, Experience requirements and upper age limits may vary depending upon the grade and functional area of Specialist Officer vacancies. Therefore, the candidates should not assume that for each IDBI recruitment, one eligibility condition is applicable, and should refer to the official notification. Graduation Percentage Requirement

The percentage of marks required in graduation for Bank Jobs depends upon the recruiting organisation and the post. For IBPS PO, IBPS Customer Service Associate (CSA), IBPS RRB, SBI PO, SBI Clerk and most IDBI Bank entry level recruitments, candidates need to possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Government of India. These recruitments do not prescribe minimum percentage of marks at graduation and only passed candidates in their qualifying degree are eligible to apply subject to fulfilment of all other eligibility criteria.

But the minimum academic performance criteria for recruitment of RBI Grade B (General) are some. Bachelor’s Degree with at least 60% aggregate marks (50% for SC, ST, PwBD candidates where reservation is applicable) or Postgraduate degree with at least 55% aggregate marks (pass marks for SC, ST, PwBD candidates where applicable) Similarly, SBI, NABARD and IDBI in their Specialist Officer (SO) and specialist level recruitments may have minimum qualifying marks or professional qualifications prescribed depending on the post. Therefore, candidates are advised to check the educational qualification and percentage criteria as mentioned in the respective official notification before applying online.

Final Year Students Eligibility

Recruitment to various banks have different eligibility for final year students. According to the SBI PO 2026 notification, candidates who are in the final year or final semester of their bachelor’s degree can apply on a provisional basis. However, if shortlisted for interview they will have to submit proof of passing the graduation examination by 30 September, 2026. Final year students can also apply provisionally for SBI Clerk 2026 notification, provided that they will produce proof of passing the qualifying examination on the date fixed in the notification if called for an interview.

Candidates should have obtained their bachelor’s degree on or before the mentioned cut-off date whereas, for IBPS PO 2026, IBPS Customer Service Associate (CSA) 2026 and IBPS RRB 2026 notifications. For instance, the candidates applying for IBPS PO 2026 must have the required educational qualification on or before 21 July 2026. Whereas, the candidates applying for IBPS CSA 2026 must have got their graduation degree on or before 21 August 2026. Candidates whose result of the final examination is declared after the cut-off-date will not be eligible to apply for these IBPS recruitments.

Distance Education Eligibility

Candidates who have done graduation through distance education, correspondence education or open universities are eligible for Bank Jobs provided their degree has been awarded by a university recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and wherever applicable by the Distance Education Bureau (DEB). Recruitment authorities recognise valid degrees in any mode of study, subject to the qualification fulfilling the recognition norms in force on the date of award. At the time of document verification candidates are advised to carry all the original degree certificates and mark sheets.

Computer Knowledge Requirements

The computer knowledge required will vary depending on the recruiting organisation and the post. The notification for IBPS PO 2026, IBPS Customer Service Associate (CSA) 2026 and IBPS RRB 2026 does not mention any separate computer certificate or diploma as a mandatory eligibility requirement. The candidates should have the only prescribed educational qualification. The online application and Preliminary Examination & Main Examination are conducted in computer-based mode.

Similarly, for SBI PO 2026 and SBI Clerk 2026 notifications, there is no need for separate computer qualification for entry level officer and clerical posts. However, candidates should have basic computer literacy to undertake the online recruitment process and perform banking operations post appointment.

For the Specialist Officer (SO) and IT posts conducted by IBPS, SBI, RBI, NABARD or IDBI Bank, candidates must have the technical or professional qualifications required for the respective posts such as Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics or other relevant disciplines as specified in the official notification.

Language Proficiency Requirements

Proficiency in language is one of the eligibility criteria for many bank recruitments especially for clerical and regional banking recruitments. For instance, the IBPS Customer Service Associate (CSA) 2026 notification mentions that candidates applying for a vacancy in a particular State or Union Territory must have a proficiency in the specified local language, which includes reading, writing, speaking and understanding of the same. Candidates who have studied the local language as a subject in Class 10 (SSC), Class 12 (HSC), graduation or higher qualification are generally exempted from the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT). However, if candidates are unable to produce such proof, they will have to clear the LLPT conducted by the participating bank before their appointment.

Likewise, candidates who have applied for SBI Clerk 2026 recruitment must be well versed in the official or local language of the State or Union Territory. Those, who have not studied the prescribed local language in their academic qualifications, have to clear the prescribed language test before joining the bank. Similarly, the RBI Assistant recruitment also has a Language Proficiency Test (LPT) after the Main Examination where the candidates need to prove their ability to read, write, speak and understand the official language of the recruitment office for which they have applied. The candidates failing to qualify the prescribed language test are not taken into consideration for final appointment.

For instance, a candidate who is applying for IBPS CSA vacancy in Telangana might be needed to show proficiency in Telugu whereas a candidate who is applying for vacancy in Tamil Nadu might be required to show proficiency in Tamil as specified in the official notification of that State or Union Territory.

Work Experience Requirements

Freshers are eligible for the majority of entry-level banking examinations, including IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO, SBI Clerk, RBI Assistant, and many Junior Assistant Manager recruitments. However, several Specialist Officer posts in SBI, IBPS, RBI, NABARD, and IDBI prescribe relevant post-qualification work experience. The required experience varies according to the nature of the post and must usually be supported by certificates issued by the employer.

Number of Attempts

The number of attempts for the banking exams is different for different recruiting bodies. Candidates belonging to General, EWS, OBC (NCL), SC, ST or PwBD categories can make as many attempts as they want for IBPS PO, IBPS Customer Service Associate (Clerk), IBPS Specialist Officer (SO), IBPS RRB Office Assistant, IBPS RRB Officer Scale I, SBI Clerk, RBI Assistant, and NABARD Grade A. Candidates can apply any number of times subject to the prescribed age limit, educational qualification and other eligibility conditions mentioned in the respective notification.

But SBI PO is an exception. As per the official notification, candidates from the General and EWS categories are allowed a maximum of 4 attempts while OBC (NCL) candidates are allowed 7 attempts. There is no restriction on number of attempts for SC, ST and PwBD candidates but they need to fulfil the prescribed upper age limit and other eligibility conditions. It is to be noted that only the Main Examination appearances are counted as attempts in the SBI PO recruitment process.

Similarly, for the RBI Grade B (Direct Recruitment) examination also, there is a maximum of 6 attempts for the General category candidates. This restriction does not apply to SC, ST, OBC (NCL), PwBD and other eligible reserved category candidates as per the provisions laid down in the official RBI notification. Hence it is advised that candidates must check the respective recruitment notification to know the applicable attempt limit before applying.

Medical Fitness Requirements

Candidates provisionally selected for bank jobs are required to undergo a medical examination before appointment. The medical fitness test will be conducted by the recruiting bank or its authorised medical officer to determine whether the candidate is medically fit to perform the duties of the post. Most recruitment notices do not specify the exact medical standards, but generally, candidates are checked for general physical fitness, eyesight, hearing and any medical condition that could interfere with the ability to perform banking duties.

In recruitments like IBPS PO, IBPS Customer Service Associate (CSA), SBI PO, SBI Clerk, RBI Grade B, RBI Assistant, NABARD Grade A and IDBI Bank recruitments, the final appointment depends on the candidate being declared medically fit by the competent medical authority. PwBD candidates with benchmark disabilities are considered as per extant guidelines of Government of India and provisions mentioned in respective recruitment notification.

Documents Required for Bank Job Applications

During the application process and document verification, candidates are generally required to produce proof of identity, educational qualification, date of birth, category certificate (where applicable), disability certificate for PwBD candidates, experience certificates wherever prescribed, domicile or language-related certificates where required, recent passport-size photographs, signature, and other documents specified in the notification. Bank Jobs Selection Process

Though there might be minor differences between various organisations, the selection process for most of the government bank jobs is structured in a similar manner.

Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of selection in most of the banking exams. It generally tests English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability. Candidates who have qualified the prescribed cut off are selected for Main Examination.

Main Examination

Language Proficiency Test
