Introduction to Internships

The word internship mainly reminds us of medical training for final-year students; however, that is no longer the reality.

History of Internships in India

Internships can be traced back to as early as 1900 in the Indian system of education. In recent times, internships have almost become mandatory for many faculties of graduation, especially for subjects or streams under the All India Council of Technical Education.

Definition and Purpose of Internships

Internships can be basically seen as a medium-term or maybe even long-term opportunity in which the gap between classroom theory and industry practice is minimized by providing skill training platforms and practical training opportunities.

Fields Offering Internships

Internships are available across various faculties such as Social Sciences, Management, Commerce, Education, Creative Arts, Law, etc.

Types of Internships

In view of the latest multidisciplinary knowledge that we are witnessing, internships can be categorized into different types based on duration and timing.

Summer Internship Period

The primary season for internships may be considered the summer period, which mostly falls from May to July. This is mainly because it does not interfere or conflict with coursework and does not disturb the study schedule.

Winter Internship Period

Another season is the winter period, starting from December to January. These sessions are mostly around 4 weeks long. This can be attributed to the winter breaks in institutions.

Duration Variations in Internships

There are also long-term and mid-term internships offered, such as those lasting 3 to 6 months or 8 to 10 weeks. Internships are wide-ranging in nature and are not uniform across all programs.

Paid vs Unpaid Internships

It is important to note that not all internships are paid. Many internships are offered on a non-payment basis. As mentioned earlier, the main intention is to learn practical work and understand industry requirements, rather than to earn money or treat it as an earning opportunity.
