Each year, there are thousands of graduates from Rajasthan who prepare for the RPSC RAS exam without going through the eligibility criteria properly. It is the failure to do so that results in rejections more often than poor examination results. RPSC recruits state government positions for the state of Rajasthan that include RAS & RTS Combined Competitive Examination for Group A and B state and subordinate posts, as well as separate recruitments for the post of teachers, doctors and technicians. There are different requirements in each notification regarding nationality, education, age and domicile and those requirements are changed from time to time.

In case of the RAS recruitment for 2026, the notification for the exam was released for 607 vacancies in various State Service and Subordinate Service posts. The applications were to be submitted from June 4, 2026, until July 3, 2026. Those applicants who are assuming that last year’s criteria is valid often realize their mistake during the scrutiny process, even after passing some rounds of exams.

Eligibility: Nationality & Basic Qualifications

Indian nationality is the fundamental eligibility criteria for positions with RPSC, and candidates have to submit valid proof of nationality during verification. There is no specific criteria in place for foreign nationals or refugee applicants for the said exam, in contrast to other state-level exams conducted by state commissions. There is a clear difference between nationality and domicile. The same individual might qualify under the criterion of nationality, but at the same time need specific proof related to Rajasthan in order to receive reservation/age relaxation facilities from the State.

Every candidate applying for an exam with RPSC must first register themselves on the Rajasthan SSO portal at sso.rajasthan.gov.in. Candidates will generate their SSO ID based on their Aadhaar, mobile number, and email ID and this ID will be used in all subsequent RPSC recruitment procedures too.

Educational Qualifications: What Qualifications are Required in Each Post?

RPSC doesn’t adopt a uniform qualification criterion for all its posts. In each particular notice, there is an individual criterion to be possessed by the candidate before the cut-off date mentioned in the notice. A graduate in any subject from a recognised university fulfils the requisite qualification for the majority of the RAS and Subordinate Service Posts. The qualifying subject in the case of the majority of the posts is irrelevant. However, specialised posts follow a different route. Teaching Posts, Posts related to technical Departments, Agriculture and Health are some of those which have certain criteria along with the basic criterion.

The last year students get a conditional allowance. RPSC allows them to give an application for the Preliminary Exam but they have to provide their degree certificate or mark sheet before the stipulated stage in the notice, which is normally before the Mains. The conditional allowance is not a uniform one in all RPSC recruitment, thus making it important to check the particular notice. As RPSC gives different notices for teaching posts, medical posts, technical posts and departmental posts separately, candidates need to check the exact qualification required according to the post from the notice.

Age Restriction and Category-Specific Relaxations

The age limit for RPSC-RAS 2026 would be a minimum of 21 years and maximum 40 years as per January 1, 2027. Age will be calculated considering the date of birth mentioned in the educational certificates of candidates and is cross-verified during document verifications.

Age relaxation is provided to reserved categories and varies according to the category and domicile.

Category

SC/ST/OBC/EBC of Rajasthan (Male)

SC/ST/OBC/EBC of Rajasthan (Female)

State Government Employees

Widowed or Divorced Women

No upper age limit

The relaxation norms pertain to particular classes and posts' combinations, and no relaxation can be extended to another combination. The examination schedule of RPSC clearly indicates that the RAS Preliminary Exam is to be held on November 29, 2026. Therefore, candidates are advised to refer to the updated exam schedule.

Domicile Regulations and the Limitation of Residency Only

It is not necessary to be a resident of Rajasthan to qualify for basic requirements of eligibility for RAS and other RPSC examinations. However, reservation facilities and age relaxation based on Rajasthan criteria can only be enjoyed by those candidates who are permanent residents of the state. The fact that one resides in Rajasthan at the time of filling the form will not make you a permanent resident of Rajasthan. Permanent residence will be proved through a certificate of domicile from an authorized person.

Non-residents from other states can appear in the examination in the general category. However, they cannot claim any benefits of reservation or age relaxation, even if they possess certificates from their own state for the same category.

Categories of Reservations and Certificate Requirements

RPSC adopts the rules of reservation as provided by the government of Rajasthan. The benefits are given when there is a submission of valid certificates in the required format. Wrong choice of category at the time of application is one of the most common reasons for disqualification. The candidates of SC/ST category belonging to Rajasthan are eligible for reservation and relaxation in age on the submission of valid certificates of caste from a competent authority. OBC and EBC candidates are further supposed to fulfill the requirements of the non-creamy layer category. The candidates of EWS category require valid certificates of income in the prescribed format. People with any disabilities require a valid certificate from a competent medical authority. Ex-servicemen, who have applied for the reserved category, should have at least five years of service experience.

Physical Eligibility Conditions for Certain RPSC Jobs

The physical eligibility conditions do not exist for all the RPSC jobs. For instance, there are some posts that have been linked to the police service. These include the Rajasthan Police Service which has physical measurement and physical fitness conditions besides the age and educational conditions. Posts falling under the Rajasthan Police Service may have height, chest measurement and physical fitness conditions depending on the post and sex of the candidate. RAS being an administrative post does not have the physical conditions. Passing the written test alone does not render one eligible for posts that have physical conditions. It is required to fulfill the physical conditions of the post as well.

Post-Wise Eligibility

Despite the change, the RAS exam remains a key means of entry into the state administrative service of Rajasthan. It comprises State Service and Subordinate Service posts in a single notice, and includes posts in Rajasthan Administrative Service, Rajasthan Police Service, Rajasthan Accounts Service, and Rural Development Service. The majority of these posts require a bachelor’s degree, besides age and nationality criteria and SSO registration. Teachers’ positions are notified separately and may include a requirement of a degree in a particular discipline and a teaching eligibility certificate. Special technical and specialist positions may involve qualifications in engineering, agriculture, or a related subject area. There is no restriction on the number of attempts allowed at RPSC exams. The only requirement is that you should be within the age limits for the corresponding category. No work experience is required, unless stated in the notice. Salaries in case of RAS and high level positions belong to Pay Level 14, one of the higher ones of the pay structure of Rajasthan.

RPSC-RAS Exam Process in Stages

RPSC RAS has three stages namely prelims, mains, and interview. Prelims examination is objective type for 200 marks. This serves as the selection round to shortlist candidates for the mains stage in the ratio of fifteen times the number of vacancies. Marks obtained in prelims are not considered for merit list calculation. Mains examination comprises four written descriptive papers, having a total of 800 marks, which holds actual importance in the final result. Three papers consist of General Studies, including History, Governance, Economy, and Administration, while the fourth paper consists of General Hindi & English. After passing the Mains examination, the candidate goes through the Personality Test of 100 marks. Final merit list preparation is done using Mains and Interview marks, making a total of 900 marks.

Unlike the RPSC RAS exam process, other exams conducted by RPSC do not follow this particular format. For teaching and technical posts, the selection process may include a written exam, skill test, or document verification with no interview process at all. It varies according to the post.

Documents That Applicants Should Keep Prepared Prior to Application

These include valid identification proof, education certificates and mark sheets, proof of date of birth, category certificate (if any), Rajasthan domicile certificate (if you are seeking a reservation and/or relaxation in age), and passport-sized photographs in exactly the size prescribed by RPSC. Certain specific posts may also require professional registration certificates and/or experience certificates. The common grounds on which applications may be disapproved: submitting an application beyond the age limit, seeking a reservation category that cannot be justified by documents, submission of an ineligible qualification for the post applied for, discrepancies between SSO and document information, and failure to meet the physical standard criteria for the post.

Final Thought

The eligibility criteria for the RPSC 2026 examination encourage the candidates who take care of individual notices without presuming them to be similar to last year's. The age criteria are limited to a single date of cut-off. The qualification criteria are maintained simple for most administrative positions but are changed for specialized positions. There is a difference between reservation facility for Rajasthan and outside state candidates. The candidates who pay attention to these aspects at an early stage increase their chances of competing through merit alone.
