You spent three years learning how to read a balance sheet, calculate depreciation and untangle GST filings. Somewhere along the way, the advice you probably got was “just prepare for SSC or bank PO like everyone else”. That's not wrong per se, just incomplete. Some of the most prestigious and highest paying jobs in the whole of the Indian government exist just because someone has to audit public money, regulate banks and read financial statements for a living and that someone is supposed to be you.

IA&AS
The Indian Audit and Accounts Service is a Group A civil service under the Comptroller and Auditor General, and it is also filled through the UPSC Civil Services Examination itself. So you sit the same exam as IAS aspirants and get allotted IA&AS based on your rank. The officers audit the central and state governments and the public sector enterprises. They get trained at the National Academy of Audit and Accounts, Shimla. The officers rise through the ranks from Deputy Accountant General to Deputy CAG in a career. This is something you should know about if you're into auditing and public finance, just like IAS is for arts graduates.
RBI, SEBI, NABARD, IRDAI, SIDBI
These five financial regulators have almost the same Grade A recruitment: graduate degree around 60%, Phase 1, Phase 2 and an interview, gross starting pay much higher than market rate for a fresher. While the RBI, SEBI and NABARD are the ones hogging the limelight, the IRDAI recruits a small batch of Assistant Managers every year for insurance regulation and the SIDBI does the same for MSME and development finance. The core sections overlap heavily, so if you prepare for one you really prepare for most of the others. Treating this as one prep track rather than five separate exams saves you real time.
SSC CGL and the Departmental Promotion Route
Your accounting and taxation background comes into play directly in the Auditor, Tax Assistant, Assistant Audit Officer and GST Inspector posts of SSC CGL. A Tax Assistant you hire today won’t be frozen at that grade forever. Tax Assistants get promoted to Income Tax Officer through departmental exam, same promotion pattern In Govt, others follow the inspector-cadre officers. So, an entry-level SSC CGL post is a real stepping stone and not a ceiling. State GST departments also have their own separate recruitment, separate from central SSC CGL, useful if you’d prefer to stay close to home. SSC CGL itself has no attempt limit, only the regular age limit. Most notifications have fee exemptions for women, SC, ST and PwD.
Banking, PSU Finance Roles and Railway Accounts
You can apply for IBPS PO, SBI PO and LIC AAO without a minimum percentage, just with a Bachelor’s degree, so don’t worry about your B.Com marks. Some PSUs also recruit Finance Officers directly, through their own management trainee exam or by preferring candidates with CA and CMA qualifications, a path that is rarely mentioned when talking about “PSU jobs”, as that phrase usually reminds people of engineers. Dedicated account focused posts of Railroads and FCI round off the list with a Commerce background.
The CA/CMA/CS Advantage
A simple B.Com will get you into every exam listed above, but for the most competitive Grade A positions, RBI considers CA, CS and CMA equivalent to a postgraduate degree for eligibility and these qualifications significantly improve your chances at the interview stage for RBI, SEBI, NABARD and PSU finance roles. It’s not a must-have, but it’s the honest difference between just qualifying and actually being competitive up top.
Selection Process and Preparation Timeline
Most Grade A regulator examinations involve Phases 1, 2, and an interview process. In case of SSC CGL and banking PO examinations, the exam cycle is completed quite fast in prelims, mains, and skill test stages without conducting any personality test separately. The preparation period of 6 to 9 months on topics of economics, finance, and general awareness will be sufficient for examinations like RBI, SEBI, NABARD, IRDAI, and SIDBI examinations.
The Reality Check
RBI Grade B permits you to take the test only six times if you are an applicant from the General and EWS category and no limit if you belong to any reserved category. It will be wise if you keep track of your attempts. Here comes a pattern that needs to be acknowledged: many commerce degree holders end up getting stuck into a typical clerical position in banks, not because they have been rejected by RBI or SEBI but simply because they did not even try the harder exam due to lack of awareness that a simple B.Com degree qualifies them to sit in IA&AS or RBI Grade B or IRDAI.
Pro-Tip: Before assuming RBI, SEBI, NABARD or IRDAI are "too advanced" for a B.Com degree, check the actual notification. All of them accept a straight Bachelor's degree in any discipline, no Master's needed, and IA&AS is reachable through the same UPSC exam every IAS aspirant sits, just allotted by rank and preference.

FAQs
