Empowering Your Future
Anybody working in Indian Railways would give the same answer about what drew them to take up this job – this is a career which will never dwindle away. Indian Railways happens to be among the biggest organizations employing staff in India, with trains, railway stations, workshops, and offices spread out in each state, and recruiting large numbers of candidates each year. If you want to make a career in Indian Railways, 2026 seems to be a good year to look out for, with new recruitment notifications being issued for engineers, technicians, clerical staff, and other positions.
Career Mitra since he had seen too many people who were aspirants of the railways fretting about which zone of the RRB they should apply, or even make a mistake in their application forms due to haste.
Railway recruitment runs through two main bodies. The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) handles larger technical and non-technical posts, while the Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) manages certain other categories like apprenticeships. Together, they release notifications throughout the year for a wide mix of roles across the country.
Railway jobs stay popular for a simple reason, job security, a fair salary, steady growth, and postings across every state. Before picking which exam to prepare for, it helps to actually understand what each one involves.
ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) puts you at the controls, training toward eventually driving trains. It suits candidates who enjoy technical, hands-on work and don't mind irregular shifts.
Technician posts cover maintenance and repair work across various railway departments, a good fit for ITI and diploma holders with a mechanical or electrical background.
JE (Junior Engineer) is one of the more sought-after technical posts, involving supervision of engineering work in civil, mechanical, or electrical divisions, and needs a diploma or engineering degree.
NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) covers a wide mix of clerical, administrative, and station-related posts, like Station Master, Goods Train Manager, and Junior Clerk, and suits graduates who prefer administrative or office-based roles over technical ones.
Group D (Level 1) covers entry-level support posts across departments, one of the most accessible starting points, especially for 10th pass candidates.
Railway zones matter too. RRBs are region-specific, based in cities like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, and several others, and you generally apply through the zone matching your home region or preferred posting location, though this can vary by notification, so always check the specific board mentioned.
If you're also weighing this against other central government options, our government job eligibility guide covers how railway roles compare with SSC, Banking, and Defence recruitment.
Eligibility depends entirely on the post you're applying for.
Qualification | Railway Jobs Available |
10th Pass | Group D (Level 1), Apprentice posts |
12th Pass | NTPC (Junior Clerk, Accounts Clerk), certain clerical posts |
ITI | Assistant Loco Pilot, Technician posts |
Diploma | Junior Engineer, technical supervisory posts |
Graduation | NTPC higher posts, Station Master, Goods Train Manager |
Always check the specific notification for your target post, since exact subject requirements and minimum marks can vary even within the same qualification level.
Category | Age Relaxation |
General | No relaxation |
OBC | 3 years |
SC/ST | 5 years |
Persons with Disabilities (PwBD) | As per government norms |
Other Eligible Categories | As per government norms |
Age Limit Generally: Normally between 18 to 33 years or 18 to 36 years, depending on the job and the recruitment notice.
Note: Age will be calculated on the basis of the cut-off date specified in the recruitment notice and not on the date of submission of the application form.
Most RRB recruitment follows a similar path.
Stage | What Happens |
Computer Based Test (CBT 1) | A screening-level test, usually qualifying in nature |
Computer Based Test (CBT 2) | A more detailed test for merit, required for most technical posts |
Skill or Typing Test | Applies to specific posts like ALP or clerical roles |
Physical Efficiency Test | Required for select posts like Group D |
Document Verification | Certificates and eligibility proof checked |
Medical Fitness Test | Compulsory before final joining |
All the scores obtained in the various shifts during the examinations are normalized so that students are not at any kind of a disadvantage because of being in a relatively difficult or easy shift. There is also the concept of negative scoring where roughly one-third of a point is deducted for each wrong answer. The passing marks are slightly lower for the reserved categories.
However, it is necessary to separately mention RPF, Railway Protection Force, since their selection process differs from the above mentioned technical and clerical jobs. The jobs of RPF Constables and Sub Inspectors involve the protection and security of railway property and persons. This position involves the element of security which makes the job of an RPF Constable or Sub Inspector closer to that of a policeman rather than being a railway position. Recruitment includes a written test, then Physical Efficiency Test, Physical Measurement Test, similar to the state police recruitment procedure, and medical examination.
Salary depends on the post and its pay level, so here's a clearer breakdown than a single wide range.
Post | Approximate Basic Pay |
Group D (Level 1) | ₹18,000 and above |
Technician / ALP | ₹19,000 to ₹29,000 |
NTPC Clerical Posts | ₹19,900 to ₹29,200 |
Junior Engineer | ₹35,400 and above |
Station Master | ₹29,200 and above |
On top of basic pay, employees receive Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance, healthcare facilities, pension or retirement benefits, leave facilities, and travel benefits, one of the better-known perks of working with the railways.
The Indian Railways happens to be one of the largest employers across the world. They provide government employment in all types of technical, engineering, administrative, medical, and operations posts. Apart from salaries and allowances, the careers at Indian Railways allow for actual career growth. This is due to the fact that promotions can only be obtained through the conduct of departmental exams and seniority, hence your career will be advancing regardless of the fact that you may not have changed jobs.
Several major recruitment drives are active through 2026. RRB JE (Junior Engineer) recruitment is currently underway with 4,098 vacancies. RRB Group D (Level 1) recruitment is in progress, with CBT examinations ongoing. RRB ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) recruitment has also progressed, with the CBT 2 answer key already declared.
Beyond these, keep an eye out for upcoming RRB NTPC, Technician, Apprentice, Paramedical, Ministerial and Isolated Categories, RPF Constable and SI, Sports Quota, and Cultural Quota recruitment, expected through the year as RRBs and RRCs release notifications based on actual vacancy needs.
Career Mitra follows all major drives of RRB and RRC as they occur and not after a few weeks since we understand that missing out on the deadline is more devastating to the railways recruiting process than anywhere else. Some of the notifications remain open for just a few weeks only.
