Now you have completed your ITI. Perhaps you are thinking about whether getting a diploma afterwards would be better, or if you should apply immediately. That is a valid point. Even without a diploma, the ITI itself provides access to government jobs that people don’t realize. This Career Mitra guide provides all the routes available to you in 2026.
Where Can ITI Actually Take You
ITI is an actual course, not merely a means to something else. This is because an ITI course leads you to jobs in the railways, defence industries, PSUs as apprentices, state boards, metro rail companies, and even the paramilitary forces. Some of these are actually government jobs while others are apprentice positions that can take you to one. Your skill, be it Electrician, Fitter, Welder or COPA, will determine your options. Choose according to that and your willingness to relocate.

RRB Technician and Railway Group D: The Biggest Employer Here
Railway employs more number of ITI pass-outs than any other organization in the country. In the current cycle, RRB CEN 02/2026, there are more than 6,500 openings of Technician posts, last date of which is end July 2026. Salaries are lesser compared to JE level, but the exam is much easier, comprising only one or two computer tests. Railway Group D needs 10th pass along with ITI qualification and also physical efficiency test.
This is for you to be honest with yourselves here. Railway can send you anywhere in the country. If that doesn't bother you, this is one of the safest and most dependable ways on this list, solely based on the frequency of recruitment.
Once the 8th Pay Commission comes into effect, salary structure of all posts in Railways would see a considerable boost. Fitment factor being discussed is around 2.57-3.0, which may indicate an increment ranging from 30 to 34%. Till now nothing is final, but implementation may not happen before its proposed date in January 2026. We will update you as soon as anything is confirmed officially.
There's also a real growth path worth knowing about. RRB Technicians who put in a few years of service can appear for internal promotional exams that move them toward JE level posts over time. It's slow, but it's a genuine route upward without needing a fresh degree.
Railway Act Apprentice: A Simple Entry Point
Apart from the recruitment process of RRB, railways also have the scheme of Apprentice under the Apprentices Act. The trades such as Fitter, Electrician, Welder, Machinist, Mechanic Diesel, COPA and Refrigeration are integrated into a workshop or a division for up to 1 to 3 years of systematic training. No written test is there and the selection is done depending upon your marks. The stipend is low i.e. between Rs.7,000 - Rs.9,000 per month, but this provides you with practical experience within the railways.
Agniveer Tradesman: Defence With a Fixed Term
Agniveer enlists ITI graduates into the Army, Navy and Air Force for a tenure of four years. Age requirement for Agniveer is between 17.5 to 21 years. Basic salary is of Rs 30,000 per month which escalates to Rs 40,000 per month after the first four years along with allowances. On completion of four years of service, a tax free Seva Nidhi corpus of approximately Rs 11.71 lakh is provided. Around 25 percent of each batch is selected for permanent service depending on their merit and performance while others exit with the Seva Nidhi corpus and get preference in CISF, CRPF, BSF and State Police recruitments.
It doesn't become an assured government career for life and that should be made crystal clear but then again, it is a very lucrative deal for four years and develops a lot of discipline too.
Indian Navy Tradesman and Coast Guard Yantrik
Apart from the Agniveer entry scheme, the Navy recruits ITI passouts directly as Tradesman Mate and other technical positions, which entail work at sea or in Naval facilities as mechanics and electricians. Eligibility age is typically between 17 and 21 years old, and the recruitment process involves a written test, physical test, and a medical test.
The Indian Coast Guard has its own independent recruitment scheme as Yantrik for 10th pass students who hold an ITI certificate in the specified field. In some cases, the Coast Guard may even consider diploma students as eligible candidates. This is a technical uniformed position which sails at sea.
Ordnance Factory Trade Apprentice: Defence Manufacturing
Ordnance factories, which have been privatized as seven defence PSUs such as Munitions India Ltd., Advanced Weapons & Equipment India Ltd., hire trade apprentices annually at over forty manufacturing units. 10th Pass with NCVT certificate is required. The majority of these units forego the written test altogether and recruit only based on your NCVT score and the trade test. The stipend is generally Rs.10,900 per month based on the 7th Pay Commission standards. This is training and not employment, though some trainees end up being recruited in future recruitment drives.
DRDO Apprentice: A Foot in Defence Research
The DRDO conducts apprentice schemes for people who have completed their ITI in different trades such as Fitter, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Instrument Mechanic, Welder, and Sheet Metal Work. The minimum required percentage in your ITI should be 65 percent, and 50 percent in your 10th standard, and also you must possess an NCVT certificate for your particular trade. The selection process will mostly involve a written test, which may further lead to an interview procedure. The stipend will not be too high, about Rs.9,000 to Rs.12,000 per month.
CISF, CRPF, BSF, ITBP and SSB Tradesman
All these armed forces have been hiring artisans and technicians on a regular basis, and the vacancies available here admit candidates with ITI qualification straightaway. The salaries earned range between Rs.30,000 to Rs.40,000; however, the exact salary would depend upon post and force in question and hence, this should be considered as an approximate figure. The postings could be anywhere in the nation and the work environment here is more disciplined than other civilian posts. Agniveers will gain an upper hand while applying to these forces post their four-year tenure. If a career in the uniform sector with the specific trade skill is something that interests you, then this entire sector needs to be seriously considered.
State Electricity Board: Lineman and Wireman
Each State Electricity Board recruits Lineman and Wireman on a routine basis, and this is the most dependable job category among all the ITI specific jobs available across the country. Candidates should have their ITI certificate in Electrician or Wireman trade. The recruitment process involves a state level written test, often followed by a skill test. In the case of Uttar Pradesh, UPPCL does the recruitment, and there is a separate board for each state recruiting for this job.
Metro Rail Technician: A Growing Option
ITI graduates may be hired in Technicians in Electrician, Fitter and Electronics categories by Metro Corporations like DMRC and metro railways of various other cities. It is a relatively recent addition to the list that is however growing rapidly because many cities in India are developing metro railway systems. Each metro corporation has its own pay structure and eligibility criteria.
PSU Technician and Apprentice Roles
Public Sector Undertakings such as BHEL, SAIL, NTPC, ONGC, IOCL, GAIL, Coal India, NMDC, Power Grid, NALCO and HAL employ ITI graduates as Technicians or Apprentices. The selection process is normally through a written exam with an additional tradesman skill test in some cases. The salary and duration of training differ from one PSU to another. In case of the apprenticeship program in these companies, it functions the same as anywhere else, with real hands-on training and allowances, but without any assurance of employment upon completion.
Office Support Roles Worth Knowing
ITI is not restricted only to jobs in the production floor of factories. Various departments in the central and state government will have openings for Data Entry Operators and Junior Assistants. These openings require ITI qualification along with some computer knowledge. The pay is low, but the job security is high, and one should consider it if he prefers COPA over machines.
NAPS: The Apprenticeship Route Most People Miss
Apart from DRDO, railways, and ordnance factories, there’s another government apprenticeship portal known as NAPS, or National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme. Any business entity registered with them, whether a government concern or a private firm, can engage ITI apprentices under the NCVT recognized trade. Registration is done right through the apprenticeship portal and there's no additional test required in most cases. It may not assure a job with the government, but it is a great resource that is underutilized by many in order to earn and learn.
A Side Route: Lateral Entry to Diploma
However, what most ITI pass-outs do not realize is that you may even be able to enter the second year of a diploma course using lateral entry. While this process consumes more time and requires more expenditure, it gives access to all of the jobs on the diploma level, such as those of SSC JE and RRB JE, which earn more money and have better prospects. This method is not suitable for everyone, but if you are young, it makes sense to consider it.
Documents and Basic Preparation
Ensure that you have the ITI mark sheet, NCVT/NTC certificate, 10th mark sheet, category certificate if needed, photo, and signed document ready well before the announcement is made because all recruitment processes involve a limited period of time for application. If it's a written test, then study well about trade theory, basic math, reasoning, and general knowledge because all the tests listed here require knowledge from one of these four areas. When it comes to the physical tests of defense and paramilitary jobs, then start practicing for them early.

Where Apprenticeships Fit In, Overall
All apprenticeships offered in railways, DRDO, ordnance factory, PSUs, and NAPS have the same basic structure. The candidates are paid a meager salary, they provide practical training to you, and they make your resume better. None of them offer any employment guarantee because they are all temporary posts which are available for only a specific time period, ranging from one year to three years. There is no assurance of getting a job after that but some places do employ people on performance basis. Do not consider apprenticeship as a substitute of the recruitment test mentioned below.
Notifications to Watch in 2026
The RRB CEN 02/2026 vacancy is currently open for over 6,500 technician positions, closing in late July 2026. The North Central Railway also has over 1,800 apprenticeship positions open. NHSRCL has opened 231 Technician positions recently for the bullet train project. Both the Ordnance Factory Bhandara and Ordnance Factory Kanpur have issued new apprentice vacancy notifications this year, along with Ordnance Factory Chanda with 140 seats. The states such as Himachal Pradesh continue to issue small technical vacancy notifications from departments like Jal Shakti Vibhag, so better check from your state board directly instead of waiting for a nationwide notification.
How to Pick
Let us assume that you are an Electrician trade ITI student considering RRB Technician over a Lineman position offered by the state electricity board. While RRB Technician earns you more and will have you travel anywhere in the country, the latter offers lesser pay but is in your home state only.
Both the options are not wrong, it just depends on your priorities.
When hiring on a consistent basis with reliability is what counts most, then go with RRB Technician and Railway Group D because they simply recruit the largest number of candidates on an annual basis. If good salary is what you need with a disciplined engagement period in mind, then give Agniveer, Navy Tradesman or Coast Guard Yantrik a serious thought. In case you want to build on the way to become a scientist/researcher or PSU professional, joining DRDO, an ordnance factory, or NAPS will be the first smart step to take despite not having a guarantee of recruitment yet. For those who are more concerned about proximity, then keep track of your state electricity board, metro rail or PWD technician vacancies.
In any case, the notification carries the definitive word about eligibility criteria and date. Always read the complete one, not someone's summary. The notifications get postponed often, many times by months, so never rely on a fixed calendar but always visit the website. If there is something you find confusing, that is the purpose of Career Mitra.
Career Mitra Pro Tip
Pay attention primarily to the recruitment process for RRB Technician and Railway Group D. The railways recruit ITI students in the highest number each year compared to all the other recruiting companies here. Check the RRB site often because the notifications can be delayed or released unexpectedly. In any case, visit Career Mitra often. We are keeping an eye on it so that you do not have to check ten sites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for both RRB Technician and Railway Group D in the same year?
Yes. Nothing stops you from applying to both, since they usually run as separate cycles.
Is Agniveer a permanent government job?
No, not by default. It's a four year term, and only up to 25 percent get offered permanent service based on merit. The rest exit with a tax free Seva Nidhi package and often get priority in paramilitary recruitment afterward.
Do apprenticeships at DRDO, ordnance factories or PSUs guarantee a permanent job?
No. They're structured training programmes with a stipend, not a promise of a job. Some apprentices do get absorbed later, but it depends on performance and available vacancies.
What is NAPS and is it worth applying to?
NAPS is a government run apprenticeship portal open to almost any registered company. It's worth applying to if you want paid, structured training without waiting for one specific exam, but it doesn't guarantee a government job either.
Which job keeps me closest to home?
State Electricity Board Lineman and Wireman posts, metro rail technician roles, or state PWD technician posts. These stay within your own state or city.
Can I grow from a Technician post into a JE level role later?
Yes, in some cases. Railways and a few PSUs allow internal promotional exams over the years that move Technicians toward JE level posts, without needing a fresh degree.
Should I do a diploma after ITI instead of applying for jobs right away?
That depends on your goals. ITI already qualifies you for solid government jobs like RRB Technician and state board posts. A diploma later, through lateral entry, can open JE level roles with better pay, but it takes more time and money. If you're stuck on this decision, Career Mitra can help you think it through.
