Thousands of graduates of Bihar appear in the BPSC examination every year. A lot of them skip over the eligibility part and go right to the vacancy count. That one habit gets you more rejections than a bad exam paper ever will. We at Career Mitra see this happening every single cycle. So this article explains exactly what the 72nd BPSC notice has demanded and where things stand at the moment while the candidates wait for a new exam date. BPSC conducts Combined Competitive Examination for the posts of Deputy Collector, DSP, Revenue Officer etc. in Bihar. There are rules for age, degree and category for every new notification. The rules are changed each year. Hence, referring to the notice of last year may make you lose your form. The notification for the 72nd CCE was released by BPSC on 5th May 2026. That pulled up 1,230 posts. That number was later reduced to 1,186 after 44 Cane Officer posts were eliminated. Those posts now have their own rule book so they are no more in this exam. Forms could be submitted until May 31, 2026 and we are no longer taking new forms for this round. BPSC has postponed the Prelims exam which was to be held on 26th July 2026. The notice did not specify a clear reason. No new date has been released yet. If any date is being circulated on social media, don’t believe it until and unless BPSC uploads it on bpsc.bihar.gov.in. Career Mitra will update this piece as and when the real date comes out, so save this page instead of chasing rumours.
Who Can Apply & Nationality Rules.
You must be an Indian citizen to appear for this exam. You will have to present valid ID papers at the checking stage. There are also categories for refugees or foreign origin candidates for some other state exams. But there is no other route in. Domicile is not the same as nationality. You can be a full Indian citizen and still need documents from Bihar to claim any benefit of any category attached to the state. BPSC also requires every candidate to complete a One Time Registration or OTR on bpsconline.bihar.gov.in before applying for any form. OTR is NOT an application for a job in itself. It just creates your basic profile that you will use for all the following BPSC exams. Once you lock this profile, you cannot change your name, father’s name, gender, aadhaar or date of birth. So double-check every field before you hit submit.
Educational Qualification
The BPSC is not looking for the same qualification for all job posts. Mostly, the important positions such as Deputy Collector, SDO and Revenue Officer require a graduate qualification from any UGC recognized college, irrespective of specialization.
Type of Post | Degree Needed |
Admin posts (Deputy Collector, SDO, Revenue Officer) | Any bachelor's degree |
Police posts (DSP) | Any bachelor's degree, plus fitness rules |
Supply and Municipal posts | Any bachelor's degree |
Technical posts | Bachelor's degree plus a matching skill certificate, where asked |
In case you are still in your last year, it would not be possible for you to apply. BPSC does not provide the same concession which some other examinations provide to the students of their last year. This is something that most of the aspirants of BPSC think applies to every other place. The post code should always be taken into consideration.
Age Limit & Relaxation Depending Upon Categories
Your age will be considered from August 1, 2026 for the 72nd CCE. Your minimum age will vary from 20 years to 21 years to 22 years depending upon the post. Maximum age varies according to gender and categories.
Category | Highest Age Allowed |
General (Male) | 37 years |
General (Female) | 40 years |
BC/EBC (Male & Female) | 40 years |
SC/ST (Male & Female) | 42 years |
Persons with Disabilities | 10 extra years on top of your category limit |
Ex-Servicemen | 3 extra years plus years served, on top of your category limit |
Govt staff with 3+ years of service | 5 extra years, but only 3 tries allowed |
These relaxations are valid for combinations of post and category. Do not presume that a relaxation in one post will transfer to another. Check the latest notification because these figures do change from one year to another.
Fee and Number of Tries
For this 72nd round, BPSC has made a single fee of Rs. 100 for all categories. This fee is less than previous rounds, such as 71st CCE round, where Rs. 600 fee was for general category aspirants and Rs. 150 fee for reserved category and women aspirants. In case you don't mention your Aadhaar number during filling of form, you have to pay an additional Rs. 200 for biometric fee. Mention your Aadhaar and avoid paying additional fee. On the number of tries, BPSC has not restricted any number for most of the categories. As much as you wish you can attempt, just within your category age limit. This is totally opposite to UPSC, where you are restricted in terms of number of tries irrespective of your age.
Domicile Rules & Why Residence Alone Is Not Enough
It does not matter whether or not you are a resident of Bihar; you can appear in the examination. However, any kind of concession available to candidates who are of Bihar will only be available to those who really belong to Bihar. Other states' residents can also apply and appear for the examination. But they will be allotted the general category quota despite possessing the reserved category card from their state.
Criteria For Reservation Categories and Required Certificates
The reservations will strictly abide by the rules laid down by the state of Bihar. You can avail the benefit only after producing the proper certificate at the time of checking. The candidates belonging to the SC and ST categories will automatically get the relaxation after producing the valid caste certificate from a valid Bihar office. The candidates falling under BC and EBC categories have to satisfy the non-creamy layer criteria, wherever it applies. The disabled candidates must have a valid disability certificate. Discharge certificates of ex-servicemen are required to be produced in a proper format.
Physical Requirements for Certain Positions
However, physical requirements are not necessary for all positions within the BPSC. Certain jobs related to the police, such as DSP, have certain physical requirements along with the mandatory degree and age eligibility criteria. This is followed by a medical examination after the interview process. Only clearing the written test does not qualify one to apply for these jobs; they will also have to pass the physical and medical tests.
Pro Tip: The website Career Mitra advises all candidates aspiring to be in the BPSC to complete OTR as soon as it is released. However, once done, the candidate cannot make any changes to their personal information including name and date of birth. Please cross-check everything from the matric certificate.
Quick Glance at BPSC Recruitment
The Combined Competitive Examination is the major route through which candidates can enter in the high-rank government posts in Bihar. These include posts like Deputy Collector, SDO, DSP, Revenue Officer, Supply Inspector and Municipal Executive Officer. Mostly all these posts only require an ordinary bachelor's degree along with fulfilling age and OTR criteria. However, besides CCE, BPSC conducts many other examinations. One such examination is Teacher Recruitment Examination, where apart from matching degree candidates are required to have a teaching degree as well as B.Ed or CTET/STET. Technical posts like engineering or medicine require matching professional degrees instead of ordinary bachelor's degrees. Salary of most CCE posts ranges from Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500, depending upon the post. Salary for DSP & SDM level posts range from Rs. 61,500 to Rs. 72,000 per month. Besides this, HRA, DA and many other perks offered by the state government are also provided.
Steps Involved in the Selection Process
There are three important stages of this exam conducted by BPSC. A medical stage follows for posts like DSP. The Prelims is a one-paper exam comprising only objective type questions carrying a total of 150 marks. Time allowed for the paper is two hours, and one-third mark is deducted for each incorrect answer. This paper only acts as a screening stage to select candidates for the Mains exam. About ten seats appear in the Mains exam. The marks scored in the Prelims stage are not taken into account to decide the final ranks. The Mains stage involves a completely written exam and here your rank is actually determined. It includes a compulsory Hindi paper, two GS papers, an Essay paper, and a paper from optional subject. Paper from optional subjects consists of objective questions, but their marks do not contribute to determining the final rank. It is just a screening stage. You undergo an interview after clearing Mains stage. In case of posts like DSP which require physical fitness tests, a medical test is conducted after the interview.
Choosing the Right Post for Yourself
Many applicants answer all the questions on the form without seeing if the post is right for them at all. The trick is:
Want a general administrator post with good growth potential? Then go for Deputy Collector or Sub Divisional Officer (SDO). Both of them require only basic bachelors degree.
Interested in a police post, but no problem with the physical test? Then choose DSP which requires some more preparation than the other posts.
Got a certain degree like engineering or law? See what technical posts you can find in the same notification instead of administrative posts.
Confused about age limits? Then work out based on your age relative to August 1 of the exam year for the post concerned.
Interested in teaching? Monitor BPSC’s TRA notification instead of CCE, because there is a difference both in process and paper.
Career Mitra also collects previous cutoffs of BPSC based on the post. After you have shortlisted two or three posts, look at the previous cutoffs. They may reveal what posts face less competition for the same number of vacancies.
Documents to Prepare Before Applying
Before applying, prepare these documents: a valid identity proof, your degree certificate and marksheets, your matric certificate as proof of date of birth, your category proof if any, a Bihar residence proof if applying as a reservation candidate, and passport size photos. Some posts having fitness requirements may require additional medical documents. Rejection of application usually occurs due to some common factors: application after age limit, selecting a category that cannot be supported with proof, application by using a non-recognized degree, mismatch of information provided in your OTR with other documents, and not meeting fitness cutoff requirement for a particular post.
Final Word
For the 2026 exam conducted by BPSC, the rules encourage those who study each new notification individually without replicating the figures from the previous year. The age limit remains constant on one particular date but changes based on the posting. The eligibility criteria for degrees remain easy for administrative posts but strict for technical ones. The reservation advantage applies only to those belonging to Bihar and not simply residing there. With the Prelims date yet to be announced, it is wise to work on your fundamentals rather than run behind an estimated date.
