India is blessed with one of the world's largest railway networks and the largest civil employer with a workforce of over 12.5 lakh employees. Over 25,000 trains operate every day, annually serving over 700 crore passengers. It is an important part of the country’s transport system and provides large-scale employment opportunities in a variety of technical and non-technical disciplines.

Therefore, the number of job vacancies is also one of the highest under Railways. Candidates are recruited for these posts through Centralised Employment Notifications (CENs) issued by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs). These notifications are for vacancies in technical, non-technical, ministerial, paramedical, engineering and Level-1 posts and each recruitment has its own eligibility, selection process and medical standards.

Railway Recruitment Eligibility Criteria 2026 Overview

The eligibility requirements are different for each Railway recruitment post and all these criteria are clearly mentioned in the CEN or the specific notification. Therefore, candidates must refer to the notification of the specific post they are intending to apply for.

In general, every Railway recruitment examines the following eligibility factors:

  • Nationality

  • Educational qualification

  • Age limit

  • Category-wise age relaxation

  • Medical fitness

  • Document verification

  • Post-specific technical qualifications if any

Basic Eligibility Requirements for Railway Recruitment

The basic requirements are similar in most Railway examinations, although the eligibility varies with recruitments or posts. The candidate must meet the medical standards notified for the position, satisfy the prescribed nationality conditions, possess the required educational qualification before the closing date of applications, and satisfy the applicable age limit.

Moreover, the candidates need to produce the original certificates during the document verification process. Also, a few categories are required to qualify additional stages such as Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), Typing Skill Test, Physical Efficiency Test (PET) or other post-specific tests as mentioned in the official notification.

Let's discuss each eligibility criterion in detail:

Nationality Criteria for RRB Recruitment

Nationality requirements followed by Railway Recruitment Boards are as per Government of India rules and are same in most of the RRB notifications.

The applicant must fall under any one of the criteria:

  1. A citizen of India; or

  2. A subject of Nepal; or

  3. A subject of Bhutan; or

  4. A refugee of Tibet (who came to India before 1 January 1962) with the intention of permanently settling in India; or

  5. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Candidates under the categories 2,3,4 and 5 are required to produce an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India before appointment.

Educational Qualification for Railway Jobs

The Railway educational qualification is specific to the post that the candidate applies. In general, the RRB recruits candidates with qualifications ranging from Matriculation (10th Pass) to Engineering Degree, depending on the nature of the job. The required educational qualification must be completed on or before the closing date for submission of online applications. Any qualification acquired after the cut-off date mentioned in the notification will not be considered.

The educational qualifications accepted by Indian Railways generally include:

  • 10th Pass

Some relevant job posts in this category are: Junior Engineer, Depot Material Superintendent and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant. The diploma a candidate holds must be specific to the job post as mentioned in the notification, which means that all diploma categories do not automatically become eligible for the role unless specified in the notification.

Railway Jobs After Graduation

Many Railway recruitment posts are open to candidates who possess a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university, depending on the educational qualification outlined in the respective Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) notification. Graduates have opportunities to apply for various non-technical, administrative and specialised posts in Indian Railways.

Official RRB NTPC Graduate Level notifications require a Bachelor's Degree from a recognised university for graduate-level Non-Technical Popular Category posts. Similarly, specialised recruitments such as Ministerial & Isolated Categories, Paramedical services and certain technical posts mention additional professional qualifications depending on the nature of the post.

Some of the Railway posts for which a graduation is a must are:

RRB Age Limit 2026

Railway Age Limit 2026 is different for every Railway recruitment. Railway Recruitment Boards prescribe the minimum and maximum age separately in each Centralised Employment Notification the post and pay level. So, candidates should always check the notification of the recruitment that they want to apply for rather than assuming the same age limit for all the Railway jobs. Official RRB notifications also mention that the candidate must meet the age criteria laid down on the cut-off date mentioned in the notification.

Here are a few examples quoting the maximum and minimum age limits for a few posts:

Category-wise Age Relaxation

The RRB provides age relaxation to eligible reserved categories like SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD etc, in accordance with Government of India rules. The exact age relaxation applicable for a post is published in the respective CEN or notification. Candidates claiming reservation or age relaxation should produce the supporting certificates in the prescribed format in support of their claim at the time of document verification. Failure to produce the required Certificates will lead to cancellation of relaxation benefit and candidature.

Age Relaxation for SC & ST Candidates

A 5 year, relaxation in upper age limit is provided to the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories. However, SC/ST candidates who are applying against Unreserved (UR) vacancies are not eligible to claim this age relaxation.

Age Relaxation for OBC Candidates

Candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer) are eligible for relaxation of upper age limit by 3 years. Candidates must have a valid OBC(NCL) certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format to avail the benefit.

Age Relaxation for EWS Candidates

Candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category can avail the benefit of reservation in Railway recruitments by producing a valid Income and Asset Certificate in the prescribed format. However, EWS status does not provide any separate age relaxation to a candidate. EWS candidates are usually subject to the same age limits as Unreserved (UR) candidates. In case an EWS candidate is also eligible under any other category which provides age relaxation (such as Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), Ex-Servicemen, etc.), he/she can avail of the age relaxation applicable for that category subject to fulfilling the prescribed conditions mentioned in the relevant Centralised Employment Notification (CEN).

Age Relaxation for PwBD Candidates

Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) are eligible for the following relaxation in upper age limit, only if the post is identified as suitable for the respective category of disability:

Category

Age Relaxation

PwBD (UR/EWS)

10 years

PwBD (OBC-NCL)

13 years

PwBD (SC/ST)

15 years

The candidates should have a valid disability certificate from the competent medical authority at the time of document verification.

Age Relaxation for Ex-Servicemen

The RRB notification mentions age relaxation for Ex-Servicemen in Railway recruitment. The age limit is calculated by subtracting the period of military service from the actual age of the candidate. This is followed by an additional relaxation of 3 years for UR/EWS candidates, 6 years for OBC (NCL) candidates and 8 years for SC/ST candidates. Candidates will have to produce a discharge certificate and other supporting documents required for claiming this benefit at the time of document verification.

Medical Standards for Railway Recruitment

Medical fitness is very important in Railway recruitment as many posts are related to operational safety. After verification of documents, the shortlisted candidates have to appear for a Railway Medical Examination conducted by the Railway Administration. Appointment is subject to being medically fit in the prescribed medical category applicable to the post.

Railway Medical Standards (A-1, A-2, A-3, B-1, B-2, C-1 & C-2)

Indian Railways classifies posts into different medical categories depending on the duties and safety requirements associated with the post. These categories include A-1, A-2, A-3, B-1, B-2, C-1 and C-2. Safety category posts like Assistant Loco Pilot require the highest medical standards while administrative and certain non-safety posts are prescribed comparatively lower medical categories. The medical category applicable to each post is mentioned in the respective recruitment notification.

Some examples include:

Medical Category

Vision Standards for Railway Jobs

Visual acuity or ability is tested for each candidate as per the medical category prescribed for the post by the RRB Medical Test. The examination may include distant vision, near vision, binocular vision, field of vision, night vision and other ophthalmic tests as per the post. Candidates should note that the prescribed vision standard varies with the medical category and therefore with the post applied for.

Colour Vision Requirements

Many operational and safety category posts require normal colour perception. Candidates applying for such posts are subjected to a colour vision test during Railway medical examination as prescribed under the relevant medical category. If you do not have the required standard of colour vision, you may be medically unfit for that particular post. Physical Fitness Requirements

The candidates selected for Railway recruitment should be physically fit to perform the duties attached to the post. Railway medical examination tests the overall physical fitness, eyesight and other medical parameters of candidates. Different posts in the Railway require different scales of medical fitness as per their work responsibility.

Physical Efficiency Test (PET) – Posts Where Applicable

Not all Railway recruitments have Physical Efficiency Test (PET). But in case of recruitments like RRB Group D (Level-1), the candidates shortlisted after the Computer Based Test are required to qualify the prescribed PET before document verification. The notification concerned specifies the physical tasks and qualifying standards. Candidates are to note that PET is qualifying in nature and only those who clear it proceed to the next stage of selection.

Posts like Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Pointsman, Assistant, Assistant Track Machine, Assistant Bridge, Assistant Loco Shed, etc. fall under this category.

Railway Exam-wise Eligibility

The eligibility requirements vary according to the recruitment conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards.

RRB NTPC Eligibility: The RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) recruitment is done separately for Under Graduate (12th Pass) and Graduate level posts. Candidates applying for the undergraduate posts must have passed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent qualification, while graduate level posts require a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university. The selection process consists of one or more Computer Based Tests (CBTs) and a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for the post of Station Master and a Typing Skill Test for the posts of Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist and Senior Clerk cum Typist. Candidates should also satisfy the prescribed medical standard for the post applied for.

RRB Group D Eligibility: RRB Group D (Level-1) recruitment is open for candidates who have passed Matriculation (10th Pass) or possess the educational qualification as specified in the respective notification (e.g. ITI or National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) for certain posts). The selection process will consist of a Computer-Based Test (CBT) followed by a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) of qualifying nature. The candidates who qualify the PET are called for Document Verification and Medical Examination. The applicable medical category is different for different posts and is mentioned in the official notification.

RRB ALP Eligibility: Candidates applying for the post of Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) should have the technical qualification prescribed in the notification, such as Matriculation / SSLC with ITI in the relevant trade or Diploma / Degree in Engineering in the relevant disciplines. Selection will be done based on CBT-1, CBT-2, Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), Document Verification and Medical Examination. Since ALP is a safety category post, candidates need to qualify the A-1 medical standard, which is the highest medical standard prescribed in Railway recruitment.

RRB Technician Eligibility: The eligibility for RRB Technician posts is based on whether the candidate is applying for Technician Grade-I Signal or Technician Grade-III. The required qualification may be ITI, Diploma or Degree in the relevant trade or engineering discipline as per the notification. Selection will be made based on Computer Based Test (CBT), Document Verification and Medical Examination. Candidates must also fulfil the medical category specified for the relevant Technician post.

RRB JE Eligibility: For recruitment as Junior Engineer, the necessary Diploma or Degree in the relevant engineering discipline along with the applicable medical category is required.

RRB Paramedical Eligibility: Candidates should have the professional qualification for the concerned paramedical post. Candidates should meet the age and medical standards notified for the particular recruitment.

RRB Ministerial & Isolated Categories Eligibility: Candidates should have the professional qualification for the concerned paramedical post. Candidates should fulfil the age and medical standards prescribed for the particular recruitment.

Final Year Students Eligibility

Candidates must have the required educational qualification on or before the last date of online application according to general railway notifications. Candidates appearing in the final year or awaiting results are not eligible unless the notification specifically states otherwise.

Distance Education Eligibility

The qualifications obtained through distance education/open universities are generally accepted if they are recognised by the competent statutory authority and meet the eligibility conditions prescribed in the notification. Candidates are advised to verify whether this qualification is valid for Government employment before applying.

Apprenticeship (Act Apprentice) Eligibility

Some Railway recruitments accept qualifications like Act Apprentice, National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) or ITI wherever specifically mentioned in the notification. Candidates should ensure that the apprenticeship qualification is accepted for this post before submitting their online application.

Documents Required to Prove Eligibility

At the time of Railway Document Verification, candidates are usually required to produce the original documents in support of their eligibility. These include proof of date of birth, educational qualification, community certificate wherever applicable, EWS or PwBD certificate, Ex-Servicemen certificate, identity proof, photographs and other documents as specified in the recruitment notification. You may be disqualified from the process if required documents are not submitted.

Common Reasons for Railway Application Rejection

Generally, applications in railways are rejected either due to non-fulfilment of prescribed eligibility conditions or during the verification of documents. Some of the common reasons are:

  • Not possessing the requisite qualification,

  • Not fulfilling the notified age limit,

  • Claiming reservation incorrectly,

  • Submission of invalid certificates,

  • Mismatch in personal details,

  • Not producing original documents,
