For primary teaching, D.El.Ed or an equivalent qualification is the baseline. For higher grades, a graduation or postgraduation degree along with B.Ed becomes necessary.
This confuses more aspirants than almost anything else in teaching recruitment, so let's clear it up properly.
CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) is conducted by CBSE and is mainly needed for teaching posts in central government schools, like KVS and NVS, and in schools run under central boards. Many state schools also accept CTET, but not all.
State TET is taken individually by each state government and is commonly required to become eligible to be a teacher in that state's government schools alone. State TET may be enough if you plan on becoming a teacher in your own state's schools only.
This is the bit that most books leave out, passing CTET is not an automatic pass into all other states' schools and clearing State TET does not allow you to enter any central school. Ensure you know what certificate your recruitment requires before deciding on which test to take. The truth is many candidates find themselves doing both CTET and State TET just to be sure.
CTET itself comprises two different papers. Paper 1 is for candidates who intend to teach class 1 to class 5 while Paper 2 is for classes 6 to 8. In case you are eligible for both levels you can take both papers in one test day.
Another aspect to take note of while preparing, the validity of your CTET or TET certificate is for a certain period of time from the date of results, after which you may need to retake the test in case you have not been.
